Parenting support
Improve your clients' skills in raising their children in a positive and nurturing way
Family is at the heart of the Polish community; its life centres around children and their needs. Some parents, however, struggle to create a safe and nurturing environment for their children because they haven't got the skills and knowledge themselves, or they encounter additional difficulties in their lives, for example, domestic violence, addictions, or severe illness.

We believe the biological family is usually the best place for the child, and parents should be supported in gaining parenting competencies to allow them to achieve the best possible results in raising their children. Our understanding of Polish culture and different approaches to parenting in Poland help us work effectively with Polish parents and carers. We support families with complex needs and are very much aware of their additional struggles related to living in a different country.

Parenting Support
The Nurturing Programme
The evidence-based parenting programme was created by child psychologist Dr Stephen J Bavolek and is being further developed by Family Links, a national charity promoting families' emotional health and well-being.

We adapted the programme for Polish clients and have successfully delivered it to groups and individuals since 2018.

Aim of the programme: to help adults understand and manage feelings and behaviour and become more positive and nurturing in their relationships with children and each other.

It is based upon four constructs or building blocks: self-awareness, appropriate expectations, positive discipline and empathy.

Over the 10-week programme, participants will look at lots of different topics, including:
-
Understanding why children behave as they do
-
Recognising the feelings behind behaviours (ours and theirs)
-
Exploring different approaches to discipline
-
Finding ways to develop cooperation and self-discipline in children
-
Learning the importance of looking after ourselves

Duration:
one-to-one - 10 weeks - 1,5-hour sessions; group course - 10 weeks - 2-hour sessions

The referrers are provided with a report detailing the client's engagement and recommendations for further support.

We offer the course remotely to clients living in all parts of England and Wales.
The sessions are facilitated by a Polish-speaking specialist with over ten years of experience working directly with parents and children known to social services or early help teams. She is also a qualified therapist, has extensive practical knowledge of the British care system and a wealth of experience supporting Polish families.
